When to Replace Your Sewer Line
Most sewer lines are built to last for decades. However, there are several factors that can cause a sewer line to fail. If you are experiencing frequent clogs or slow drains, it may be time to call for sewer inspection. We offer video inspections to determine the condition of the sewer line and identify the cause of the problem.
Sewer line replacement may be required after:
- The sewer line is more than 50 years old
- The sewer line is made of outdated materials, such as clay or cast iron
- The sewer line has been damaged by tree roots or shifting soil
- The sewer line has been damaged by freezing and thawing
- The sewer line has collapsed
There are several ways to replace a sewer line, but the best method for your home will depend on the location of the line and the extent of the problem. If the sewer line has been damaged by tree roots or shifting soil, the damaged section of the line can be replaced without digging a trench. This is done by inserting a liner into the existing sewer line and inflating it. The liner hardens and creates a new pipe within the old pipe.
If the sewer line is collapsed or has been damaged by freezing and thawing, it will need to be replaced. In most cases, the old sewer line can be removed and a new one can be installed without digging a trench. This is done by using a method called pipe bursting. A cable is inserted into the old sewer line and a new pipe is attached to the end of the cable. The cable is then pulled through the old sewer line, breaking it apart and pushing it into the surrounding soil. The new pipe is then connected to the existing plumbing system.
